ALLISON
SYLVESTER.
I grew up in 1970s Devon, in a quiet, rural village very much immersed in the land and lore. As children it was expected that we would be out from under foot so my siblings and I spent the majority of our time outside, free to roam - playing, creating, collecting ephemera - so long as we stuck together.
In addition, elderly neighbours and local farmers shared garden knowledge and gave us free reign of the land so we were very much nurtured by and known by the community.
I had a sense of belonging and quiet pride of being from here as a child.
Once through school, the desire to make and create continued through an excellent Foundation Art year in Torquay, then a B A in Jewellery and Metalwork from Loughborough.
Formal education continued with a Masters degree in Fine Art Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. Without exception, all my art teachers have been inspiring, challenging and receptive.
London became home for the next eighteen years with much visiting beloved Devon.
The artistic journey developed into employment as a card designer and gallery manager - then children happened! It was a natural transition into Arts coordinator at my children's primary school until we left London in 2007.
A growing practice of making, exhibiting, collaborating and teaching continues here in the beautiful South Hams; always inspired by a deep observation of the natural world around me.
It’s a pleasure and privilege being able to deliver an experimental painting workshop for adults, show KS3 students how to print (in my job as art technician), create and sell work for my favourite, local shops, all in one slightly chaotic week.
